My Birthday, and other News

I have a busy week ahead! I am excited!!! I have a new job as casual/on call at an agency in town. I am very happy. I had an interview a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't think that anything would come from it. I was wrong. They called me last week to ask me to come down to sign a few things, and I had my doctors approval appointment today. I got it! I have a few days of orientation, then I will work as they call/need me. I still have to take my 1st Aid Course, and I have to take my Class 4 Drivers, then I will be able to do all tasks, and work alone. I am SO grateful to the Lord for giving me this opportunity. It isn't a TON of money, but it is on average of what people in my field make, and iit gets my foot in the door, and I get experience.

So about my birthday....

It was just okay:) Hubby was grumpy for some of it, and we were late for church, among other things (no, NOT that thing!), and we really hate being late for church. Anyhoo...it was a good sermon, and it was kind of funny, because it was on bridging the gap btwn the young and old, similar to what I was referring to in my "Friends to have" post. Anyway...after church, hubby was still grumpy, and I didn't feel like being around someone who was grumpy on my birthday, so I went to my friend to ask her if she wanted to have coffee with me, and they invited us to lunch. We went to Original Joe's. which good. I ordered something that I thought was something else (I thought the ribs were going to saucy, not dry), but it was all still good..and the visit was great.
Dirt Cake..SOO good!!! I may have eaten most of it myself.

Some other friends of ours wanted to get together as well, and invited and took us out for dinner. We were STILL stuffed from lunch, so I had no idea on how I was going to eat...but I survived (consequently, I didn't eat much today at all). We went to Hoja's Mongolian Grill, and it was really good.

Key Lime CheeseCake:)

We got home and we were both very tired. I sat down to watch Big Bang Theory, and after three episodes, I went to bed. So that was my bday for 2013.  I have a fairly big week ahead, and lots of activities planned. I am looking forward to gradding this weekend. My family will be in town to help my celebrate:)

15 Things You Should Never Say to Someone Facing Infertility

I have read this before, and this is simply brilliant...I can't take credit for it, though...Please read!!!!

I have rc;d a few of these comments...

15 Things You Should Never Say to Someone Facing Infertility

Infertility is a crisis that affects over 2 million couples today. Infertile women (and men) are forced to ride an emotional roller coaster, full of ups and downs, twists and turns. It can greatly affect their relationships with family and friends, and have a negative impact on their lives in general. Supportive and encouraging friends can be difficult to find in the midst of infertility.
My husband and I were one of the estimated 1 in 6 couples that struggles with infertility in some way. Fortunately, our story has a very happy ending in that we went on to get pregnant naturally less than a year after a diagnosis. However, during that time I did connect with other woman in similar situations. I learned that comments from family and fertile myrtle friends can be very hurtful and disheartening.

I did receive a few of these comments, I just passed them on as ignorance, but they weren't helpful at all. Personally, I chose to not let negative comments affect me. I learned early on to be very careful with whom I discussed my infertility with. Infertility can affect people in different ways, and inappropriate comments do not help at all.

If you are trying to be a good friend to someone with infertility, kudos to you! Your support and friendship can mean the world to them. Here are 15 things to never say to a friend (or coworker, family member, total stranger) that is facing infertility.

"Well, I have the opposite problem! My husband just walks in the room and I get pregnant."

That's great for you. However, this comment is just not a very uplifting thing to say to someone who can't get pregnant. It turns the conversation on yourself, and won't make matters any better. Please avoid comparing their infertility to your blessing of fertility.

"Just relax and then you'll get pregnant."

This is a very common tip that many infertile women receive. It's inappropriate, because it's simply not true. While stress and tension can affect fertility in some ways, just relaxing isn't a cure for infertility. If that were true, the world would be a much more populous place! It's like saying to someone facing cancer, "Just relax and then you'll be healed." Also, this comment assumes that they can't relax, which is probably not true, and it's not encouraging them to make such assumptions.

"Why don't you adopt?"

I'll admit that several years before I was even married, and knew that my husband and I would have infertility issues, I once found myself talking to someone who could not get pregnant. My first thought was "Have you considered adoption?" Little did I know how inappropriate that comment can be. (Fortunately, several years later i was able to apologize to her.) Adoption is a very loving choice, but it's not possible for some couples. Some simply aren't ready to give up the dream of having a biological child. Some couples may not qualify for adoption because of health issues, background, or simply cannot afford it. Also, chances are they have definitely already thought of adoption and they'll let you know when they're at that point.

"Just be patient, if it's God's will, He'll bless you with a child."

Some similar versions of this comment are "God will give you a child when you're ready." Or, "Maybe this is God's way of saying you're not meant to have kids." These comments are perhaps the most hurtful and insensitive things you can say to an infertile women. The truth is, no one knows God's will, and making statements like these are like putting words into God's mouth. Sure, we can make some pretty good guesses about God's will, but we don't know. It's like saying to a mother whose child is dying of cancer "Maybe this is God's way of saying you're not meant to be a mother anymore." Or, to a parent who's child has been kidnapped, "Just be patient, it it's God's will your child will be found."

That being said, I do feel that facing trials such as infertility develops perseverance. I can look back at this time and see how God worked in my life. But, I do not believe that all tragedies are God's will, and no one should ever assume that.

"Why don't you just get a dog?"

No offense to dogs (I have one and she's great) but a pet and a baby are not the same thing. That comment won't help her at all, trust me on this one.

"Once you adopt I bet you'll get pregnant."

Although this does happen, statistically it is very, very rare. This statement also conveys (in a small way) that a biological child is better than an adopted child. Please avoid ever saying this to an infertile friend.

"Well so-and-so didn't have any kids..."

I had a relative say this to me once. It's just not very comforting. Not to beat a dead horse on comparing it to cancer, but it's similar to saying someone who found out that have a terminal illness, "Well, Great Aunt Martha had cancer and she died."

"Have you tried.....(insert advice here)?"

Trust me, they've probably tried it. More than likely the advice you have isn't going to help them, so refrain from providing little tidbits of advice. Unless you have been in her shoes exactly, it is not your place to be playing nurse.

"You can have my kids, I don't want them."

Um, that one's pretty self explanatory.

"Well, at least you..."

Any comment that starts with "at least" probably isn't going to be very encouraging to someone facing infertility. She has, more than likely, realized how blessed she is to be married, have a good job, etc, and making comments like that only minimizes the problem. If you want to helpful, never make a statement like that.

"Why don't you try In Vitro Fertilization?"

This comment sounds helpful, as you are suggesting treatment, but it's nosy and not really something you should ask. Many couples (such as my husband and I) did not feel that in vitro was morally and ethically the right decision. Also, with each attempt costing about $12,000 (or more), some couples cannot afford this option.

"Enjoy your childless time that you have now."

It's common to want to point out that they can still travel, have time to themselves, get manicures, etc. But, truthfully, this isn't the lifestyle that she wants and its hard to enjoy something you didn't plan for. Also, more than likely all of their money is going towards medical bills, not extravagant vacations and such.

"I understand. It took us 5 months to get pregnant."

Taking 5 months to conceive and being diagnosed with infertility are completely different situations. I know you may be trying to be helpful, but its best not to play the comparing game.

"Why don't you just take a vacation or something, maybe that'll help?"

That's fine to suggest, if you want to pay for it. But, truthfully a vacation won't fix a medical issue. Please do your best to avoid recommending that.

"Well, if I had known how difficult kids were, I wouldn't have signed up!"

An acquaintance made this comment to me once. Truthfully it didn't bother me. But it's a very negative comment and won't make someone feel better. It is turning the conversation on yourself and minimizing the problem. Your friend or acquaintance facing infertility may have more patience and mothering skills than you, and it's wrong to assume that she's like you.

In conclusion, please remember that infertility is a grieving process. They are grieving a shattering dream, something they've probably desired since they were a little girl. The best thing you can do is listen, pray for them, and support them through this time of trial.

The 12 Friends that Every Woman Needs (and 3 to Watch Out For).

I will post more about this past week, and my bday weekend probably tomorrow, but I thought I would talk about friendships. I was inspired to write something on this, from a magazine article I read a while back. I am NOT copying it; I am only writing from my point of view...and the friends that I think are important.... So many women think need to have friends who are in the same stage of life as they are....married, moms, kids with the same ages...and while that IS important, it is also important to have OTHER friends from other demographics. Why? So we can learn from each other. We all have different experiences, and we can give each other feedback and encouragement, and they can bring different things to the table, and can offer a different perspective of/on things...here are 5 different friendships that I have found to be important.

First..let me define friends..these are not work, nor family (although I will talk about that). They are people that you chose to have as your friend in your life. I am also mainly talking about real life friends...although I know a lot of us have online friends, and they are not to be disregarded. I have a lot of online FB friends (and penpals) that I connect with on an almost daily basis. However, I am mainly talking about friends that we connect with and in our daily lives.

1. The older friend. Honestly? Most of my friends are older than me (this does not include..although it can..your family..mom, aunts, grammas). I have always seemed to connect more with ladies that are at least 10-15 years older than me (or older). They have had more experience. For one, they aren't trying compete with life. They have finished raising their kids, may or may not be retired, and have decided that the "young" stuff just isn't worth fighting over. They (for the most part) don't have an attitude (although I have worked with ladies who have attitude...), and they know what they want. They may or may not be parents/grandparents, or may or may not be married. It doesn't matter...it is important to have at least one (or more!) friend who has at least a decade older than you. One of my best (non-family) friends is a lady in our church. I go to her and talk to her about LOTS of stuff...when the two of us go for coffee, we talk non stop! We have fun and laugh..a lot!

2. The younger friend. Not all girls (I am assuming we are talking about girls here) are ..well..you know. Last year, in my English class, one of the girls who was 19 and I got to know each other and connected fairly well. We still text to this day, are on FB together, and chat about school, and life. This last year, one of my closest  classmate friends is 22 years old. Again, we just connected. Of course, I am friends with all the other girls, but she and I somehow really connected. We hung out together, I went to her house to help her study...we talked about our pets...Why can younger friends make good friends? Well, I think it is because they are full of life, full of wonder, and have the world at their fingertips. They aren't jaded by life's experiences, have confidence (even to the point of being arrogant, but we wont go there!!). They are excited about the adventure they are about to go on (again, it doesn't matter if they are married or not, have kids or not). Also, if you are both going to school, they make great study buddies. They are in the "school/study"mode, and have all the tips and tricks on how to help you study. Plus, they have a young and fresh view on/of life.

These next few I am going to combine....depending on your demographic...

3. The Married (if you are unmarried) Friend...Yah, I remember when I was single, I thought married people were annoying. And yes, we can be. But as a single, my married friends offered some good advice on life...(they also offered some clichés, which bothered me), don't rush into marriage, enjoy being single...to name a few. You also get to see an insight into their life. Marriage isn't perfect, and it is good for singles to see that (and vice versa). The single and marrieds CAN interact together and still get along! However, Singleton, try not to flaunt your crazy single life in their face:)

4. The Single Friend (if you are married). Yes...as I have stated..it is not sinful to hang out with your single friends (including widows and divorcees)! We CAN be together. You BOTH have something unique to offer. Your single friend is probably pretty crazy; she may want to go out and try new things, or maybe she has more free time than you. That's ok. You can BOTH enjoy each other's company, and learn from each other. Ask her what she likes best about being single, and she can ask you the same thing.  You can explain (nicely) that marriage isn't all good all the time, and although she is probably wanting to get married, encourage/remind her that once she gets married her time is not her own. Please stay away from using too many clichés. Please remember, though...try to not talk about your marriage ( and SEX) ALL the time when you are with your single friends...it can become annoying (unless you came to them and asked specifically to talk about it). Trust me. I have been there.

5. The Mom Friend (if you don't have kids). This is probably the hardest one for me. Because I don't have kids, it can be especially emotional and a bit sad being around children. If you can handle it, however, this is a great friend to have. Again, you can see her side of life...you can enjoy her kids, and then go home..give her kids candy, then go home..you get the idea! When I am with my nephew, for instance, I can enjoy him, but I also realize how TIRED I am when I am done. I am SO GLAD to get home to MY OWN space, MY OWN time, and I can DO WHAT I WANT! You enjoy the kiddies, then go home. 'Nuff said. You realize that being a mom is tough. You are always worrying about the kids...you get to see a side of your friend that you may have never seen before. They are a mom...they have other worries and needs other than what you see and know as a girl friend (Again, it doesn't matter if they are single, married, divorced, etc). That being said, they also have dreams, thoughts, ideas, and experiences that go beyond (or before) having kids. Ask them about their life before having babies. What did they do? Did they work? Do they still work (as your friend, you should know this..but you know what I mean)?

6. The Non-Mom (Married) Friend (if you have kids). Please, oh, please still hang out with us! Just because we don't have kids, it doesn't mean we are idiots. We have ideas, thoughts, feelings, too. Ask us about our lives, our dreams. If you know she can't have kids due to health reasons, ask her how she is doing once in a while. Acknowledge her on Mother's Day. Have your kids give her a card to their "Aunty". Give her a flower. Don't be offended if she doesn't want to come to your kids' bday parties (esp if they are younger children...I know being around younger kids can be hard for me), or to your baby showers. But please, oh, please don't spend 24/7 talking about your kids ALL the time! It gets annoying, trust me. I've been there. Save all that talk for your mommy/play groups/dates.

7.The Family Friend. No, I mean, family. You know, your mom, sister, aunt, SIL, Grandma, girl cousin (or "in-laws"...you know..your boy cousins wife, etc) You know what? Some of my closest friends are family. I call my aunt at least once every two weeks, my SILS at least once a week (I try), my cousin once a week or so, my mom..well, you get the picture. Two of my aunts are almost like my second moms. My cousin is like my (annoying!..LOL) older sister. It doesn't matter if they are younger or older than you (although most of my female rellies are older). It is nice to have someone to go to talk about someone else in the family who you don't maybe understand, or they really do annoy you, and you maybe need their advice and experitise on how to best approach them. My mom told me that when she got married, she and her brother in law started an "{last name| in law" group. To talk about their frustrations of being married in the family. Ok, it wasn't a group, but they would get together and talk. True story. Every family has their quirks. Enjoy yours!!

8. The Family Guy Friend. Ok, this is a bit harder to explain, but I will try. You know when you want some man advice, but you don't know who to go to  (yes, you can go to your pastor, and that is a good idea, too), or maybe it is some family advice you want to seek, but you don't want to go to your brother, dad, etc? Family guy friends are great for this. These are guys who are family, but they have not been in your family for very long; my aunt's hubby has only been in our family for about 12 years, my cousins hubby about 13 years. Yes, they are family, but in my opinion, they are different...kind of like "in-law" family (as I described above). You feel comfortable going and talking with them about guy-related stuff that you may not feel comfortable going and talking to another guy relative about.

9. The Non-Christian (or of another Faith friend). I have a lot of non-Christian friends. Ok, not a lot, and we are not totally close, but I love having friends from all different walks of life. I LOVE hearing about other cultures, religions.  Again, we can all learn from each other. Sometimes, when I have a problem, I would rather talk to my non-Christian Friend than a Christian friend about it. They have a different view, and we Christians can get so "preachy" with what and how we say things.  "God knows",  "I will pray for you about it" (which, btw, these are all good things to say and know). These things, while good, can get tiring to hear all.the.time. Talking to someone else who doesn't have a faith (or a different faith) can give you another perspective and life-view.(and also, it shows your Non-Christian friends that you aren't perfect).

10.The Christian (or of Faith) Friend. This is pretty much the same as above. If you aren't a believer, we still enjoy hanging out with you. We like to hear your ideas, thoughts, your dreams. You can offer  us advice that our other Christian friends can't.

11. The Online/Blogging/Facebook Fried. Ahhh...the quintessential online friend! How many of our "friends" on FB are our real life friends? I would say that nearly half of mine are online friends. Ones who I have never met. We can offer advice based on what we see online. We don't know each other. We are brought together by several groups, blogs, etc. I have a lot of TTC friends on FB. Another blogging friend has made friends from TCOYF. There are online boards (not so much chat rooms, but those as well) that bring people together. We have been brought together be some sort of connection; PCOS, TTYC, a disease, weight lose, childless momma groups, Baby loss groups. Sometimes, THESE friends are the only ones who truly can understand what we are going through, and can offer advice and encouragement with out judgment or lack of knowledge on their part.

Ok..this is getting long..sorry..but here is one more...

12.The School (or College) Chum. You know the one. Maybe you went to elementary or high school together. You have seen each other through bad boyfriends, marriage, babies. You bring out the school or college year book, and can reminisce for hours. I have a few friends in this category, but not a lot. I went to Bible College for one year, and I STILL have friends who I connect with on FB. Although we don't talk as much as we used to, we can connect on some special level that will always be there.

...And the 3 Friends You Should Watch out For:

There are those that we KNOW we shouldn't be (close) friends with..ones who are rude, swear (A LOT), users (not THAT kind of user...lol), arrogant, obnoxious, selfish) but I have found that there are some ppl who are friends with "friends" who really aren't (or don't want to be) their friends at all...

1. The Non-Reciprocate Friend. I have a few of these friends. I love them dearly. I ask them for coffee, and they don't respond, I say hi or leave a msg for them on FB, and they don't respond. There are some friends that I am ALWAYS initating things with, and to be honest, it drives me nuts. And while there are ppl in your life that you can't get rid of (family, etc), you don't need them in your daily life. If you can't leave them be, at least minimize your time with them.

2. The Needy/User Friend. You know the one. They ask you to look after their kids, pick them up, run your errands for you, who call/text you. all.the.time. They never ask you about you, they never offer to help you, or if you do ask, they say no. They always talk about themselves. You don't need them. Let them find new friends to use.

3.The Problem/Negative Friend. You know who they are. They always have problems (and want you to solve them), and want advice, but they won't take your advice, and grow (up). They are always down(and no, I don't mean in a depression), they always have something wrong with them (not so much health-wise..but that can be involved too). They don't want to move forward in their life. They always call you up; to talk about the problems in their life. If you are ok with spending your time with someone, then go ahead, may God Bless you, but watch out for your own mental and emotional health. Don't let yourself become bogged down with their problems.

Please Note: With the three above mentioned "friends"; there are times (and will be more times) that we will need our friends more than usual. I am NOT talking about times like that. I am simply talking about the friend who has this going as a regular part in their life. We will all have times when we NEED our friends!!!! There are times when we will get a disease, have a baby, an accident, and we will be called upon to help them. I am not talking about those types of circumstances.

Well, I think that about covers it. I hope I have made some sense:) Happy Saturday!

5 on Friday!

Yay! It's the weekend! And even better, it is my birthday weekend! I love birthdays! I don't know that we will be doing too much, because, as usual, we are a bit tight financially, but if we have a nice day together, I will be happy. It is supposed to be a great wknd, weather-wise, too!!! It is clouding up right now; but I spent an hour this morning on our deck, journaling and enjoying the sun. I was hard pressed to only find 5 (more) things this Friday, but here they are...

 1. Ok, Techinally, the two pics are one...SLUSHIES! An FB friend of mine was talking about how she loved an iced tea slushie, and I wanted to try it, but not knowing where to find it, I thought I would make my own. I had iced tea, and cranberry. Straight up juice and ice. That is all. It was very good.
 2. My balcony. I know to some of you, it looks awful, but to me, I love it. I love sitting out here in the mornings, or in the evenings, and reading or journaling, and spying on people..uh, I mean, people watching!
 3. The Big Bang Theory. I love this show! We started getting into it when it came on right after the news; we both laugh a lot over this show. I have got seasons 1 and 2 from our library. I am already done the first disc on season 1. I may watch some more over the weekend. (for the record, I don't believe that the BBT happened,  nor do I like some of their "theories" in the show, but other than that, I love it).

4. I finally finished UNTIL THE END OF TIME, and I am about half finished THE JUDGMENT (does anyone else think that word is spelt wrong?).  I have to read it at work, as I haven't bought it yet (our library didn't have that book in the series). I love Ms. Lewis' books. Even if you aren't a Christian, or don't read Christian fiction, you should read it. FYI, Ms. Steel has two small stories in one in the "Time" book, and the last one was about an Amish girl. I didn't think she portrayed the Amish in the best light...but that could be just me. There were a few things that she wrote that I didn't think were true.

5. T-shirts (yes, I like bright colours).I am not a big regular boring t-shirt person, they look awful on me, and they don't do anything for me. I love these, though. The red one (top) I bought at Target, the middle from Avon (I am getting another one from them..I am so excited), which sadly has some stains on it, but I wear it anyway. The pink one I got I think from Walmart. I love them all. I wish I had 10 of each colour:)

I still have a few that I will save for next week (even if I do SUYL, I will still do this); a salad that I have been making this week, and one of my new favourite colours:)

Happy Friday!

Family History Post

I thought I would put "Exploring my Family History" for Five things Friday, but since I have SO many other favourites for this week (I am having of fun thinking, planning, and deciding on what to put in for this week...and taking lots of pics of my fav things of the week), I thought I would do this as a separate post.

First though..just a quick health update...not having the healthiest of days..I am not overly worried, as it is probably because I have had too much fluid:( I feel very full, and I feel like I am out of breath a lot. I get like this once in a while for a day or so. I am not blue, and I use my mask at night, so unless it gets worse, I won't worry about it.

Ok...moving on...

I was working on a project for our website  regarding my grandparents' love story. She wanted it down in 10 days. I got it done in about a month. Because I am slow and forgetful, and a procrastinator like that. I finally finished it about 5 minutes ago. Although it was frustrating trying to get information, and I have spent the last school year writing papers, I actually had some fun digging up info, and writing it out.

I think family history is amazing!!! I love hearing the stories of our grandparents. I remember being young, and being with grandpa and his oldie goldie friends, and being bored silly because of all the stories of history that they were telling. What I wouldn't do now to sit down and chat with them all. Perhaps when I get to heaven we will all get to chat:)

One of the things I am watching, and a bit into, is Who Do you think You are?. I love seeing celebrities tracing their family roots.

I even got the first season from the library!! I currently record the series when it comes on TV.

Watching this show makes me want to do more digging into both sides of my family's roots. I would love to back to my family's ranch back in the 1940's, and be a fly on the wall, seeing how they lived. Can you imagine. Everything they did on the ranch took time, energy, and resources, and of course, patience. There was never any free time during the day, and what little free time they did have, they spent with their family in the evening. The ranch didn't get electricity until the 1950`s, so most of what they did was done by the natural light of the sun, and by the lamp at night. Everything they did they did with purpose.
I know their lives were hard, but they very rarely complained. It was just the way it was. Everything day did was an adventure, and they looked at it, and took it on as such. Even having babies was an adventure!

My greatgramma was 8 months pregnant, when she went by canoe in the middle of December from the ranch to Kamloops to have my Great Uncle Ted. I happened to read the letter she wrote to her sister, and she proclaimed that the entire trip was an adventure!

Anyway, as usual, this post isn't make sense, so I will just conclude that I think family history is amazing, maybe I should have gone into ancestry, or genealogy or something. I think that would have been great fun!

We are finally getting some sunny weather again! That makes

me very happy! (that is 86F for my American friends)

I spent today and yesterday at the park, surrounded by books and magazines. I am trying very hard to not get burnt again. I also spent time outside on our balcony, where hubby has very lovingly made a bit of a city garden. He also has solar lights spread around the balcony, which is very nice:) I spent some time both evenings relaxing and reading my book.

And who wouldn't want to sink your teeth into this yummy treat?
Google or Pinterest Cronut. I dare you NOT to want to try it (or at least to not want to pin it). I wish our local bakery made it, but alas, it is only found (for now) in a bakery in NYC.
Well, I guess you could call this a pre-5 things Friday:) I have SO many, that I may have to make it 10 things Friday:)

Happy Wednesday!
